Grand Central Art Center Exhibition: 100 Artists See Satan - A Fundraiser
June 26th, 2010 - August 15th, 2010
Grand Central Arts Forum, the support group for Grand Central Art Center (GCAC) is revitalizing the hit exhibition, 100 Artists See Satan, a survey of contemporary artists and their interpretation of the supreme demon. Unlike the original exhibition, this iteration of the collection will be presented as a fundraiser, with works available for sale to the public. All proceeds will benefit future GCAC programs and exhibitions. An exclusive preview will be held Saturday, June 26 from 6-7pm with the public reception scheduled from 7-10pm. On July 3 from 7-10pm GCAC will host another reception to coincide with Downtown Santa Ana's First Saturday Arts Walk.
100 Artists See Satan was originally organized by GCAC in response to another exhibition, 100 Artists See God, curated by John Baldessari and Meg Cranston for Independent Curators Inc. New York. The two shows exhibited simultaneously in 2004, Satan at GCAC and God at Laguna Art Museum, and gained notable attention from the public and media.
This second installation of the exhibit will offer the public a chance to purchase works from acclaimed artists. To further raise funds, Grammy Award winning graphic and packaging designer, Hugh Brown has been commissioned to design Satan's credit card, limited edition of 666. This collector's item is available only at the GCAC bookstore for $50. Cardholder's benefits include a discount on select merchandise in the GCAC Sales Gallery as well as the opportunity to win an artwork from the exhibition.

Bowers Museum Exhibition: Quilts - Two Centuries of American Tradition & Technique
July 3rd, 2010 - January 16th, 2011
Back by popular demand, Quilts: Two Centuries of American Tradition and Technique presents the Bowers’ most popular American quilts. To satisfy the curious and creative visitor, emphasis is placed on the quilts` construction techniques.
Guest curated by Julia D. Zgliniec, Quilts: Two Centuries of American Tradition and Technique presents the patterns, stitches, fabrics and other construction techniques of the Bowers’ most popular quilts, and many that have never before been exhibited. To satisfy our curious and creative visitors, the top and bottom sides of several quilts will be visible. The exhibition features a variety of 19th and early 20th century patterns, a “Whole Cloth” or “Linsey-Woolsey” quilt dating to 1776, a 1930s “Utility” quilt made of men’s suiting samples, and an unfinished variation of a “Crazy” quilt from c. 1850. Made using paper templates of old receipts, bills, letters and other documents, this particular quilt is every bit as interesting as a historical item as it is a textile.

Bowers Museum Exhibition: Gemstone Carvings - The Masterworks of Harold Van Pelt
July 17th, 2010 - January 3rd, 2011
For over 35 years Harold Van Pelt has perfected the art of carving quartz and agate stones. The Bowers Museum is proud to be the first to assemble a body of Van Pelt`s work in an exhibition that highlights the remarkable beauty and extraordinary skill of gemstone carving.
Thousands have admired the work of Harold Van Pelt who, along with his wife Erica, are considered the best gem and mineral photographers in the world. Few know of Van Pelt’s extraordinary ability as a fine art gemstone carver, and nobody has ever seen his entire body of work assembled in one place. Bowers Museum is proud to present the first comprehensive exhibition of the extraordinary artworks of Harold Van Pelt.
For over 35 years Van Pelt has quietly been perfecting the art of carving quartz, rock crystal and agate gemstones. Hundreds of hours go into each multi-faceted, fluted, and textured vase, hollow container, sculpture and vessel, many of which are accented with gold and semi-precious stones. Working the stone down to paper-thin walls brings out the gorgeous natural quality and colors of the agate and gives quartz the transparency of glass. Transformed by one man’s vision and skill from a solid stone to an incredibly delicate work of art, the gemstone carvings of Harold Van Pelt have to be seen to be believed.

Digging Up The Dirt - An old story of loving to death
July 30th - August 29, 2010
A play about poerty perversion; about making love and making art; about that old story of loving to death. Who murdered "Sirena Cantante" is not the question. The questions is: why?
"Digging Up the Dirt" takes place, as Moraga writes, "Inside The Poet's head, somewhere in the fragmented Chicano nation of Aztlán." Here, as in most Moraga plays, the playwright uses the imagined landscape of the Southwest to poignantly explore those censored questions that continue to impact Chicana lives. And, as in most Moraga plays, such depictions give all of us pause -regardless of race or gender or sexuality. This is especially the case in "Digging Up the Dirt" where the plot thematically interweaves two murder stories. One is the tale of "Sirena Cantante's" murderer, "Josefa Zanzibar," serving a life sentence, while, engaging in lesbian romances and being mercilessly visited by the probing "Poet." The second is an intimate account of the murder of "Amada," a Chicana lesbian killed by the hand of her own son. Through the telling of both stories, alternately satirical and tragic, audience members are held accountable for their own "crimes of passion" and the play becomes a kind of moving mirror to all our unacknowledged "murderous" deeds of the heart.

We are going bananas over this important find! This calls for a celebration.”
SAA ZUU’s tomb and its mystical treasures will be on display for one night only as the Santa Ana Zoo is transformed into a magical Egyptian oasis at Zoofari 2010.
All of the ancient Egyptian Pharaohs, their Queens, SAA ZUU, and Zoofari 2010 Honorary Chairs Sandy Segerstrom Daniels and Ed Arnold hereby command all party animals to come celebrate the majesty and splendor of the enchanting pyramids and temples on our beautiful grounds.

El Movimiento
The Chicano Arts Movement in Orange County
Exhibit runs September 4 - October 17, 2010
Through a cultural celebration of the arts Grand Central Art Center is proud to highlight those artists who brought the Chicano Movement of the 1970s to Orange County. The Chicano Civil Rights Movement of the 1970s was not only a catalyst for social justice, but the beginning of an education reform in Southern California. These leaders sought to reduce drop-out rates, develop bilingual programming, expand support to higher education, increase the number of Chicano educators, and develop curricula centered around Chicano studies. As part of the growing interest in heritage emerged Chicano art fueled by cultural pride. These artists reproduced what they saw in their communities and united a growing population.
This exhibition is a timely one corresponding with the city of Santa Ana's bicentennial celebration of Mexico's Independence from Spain, and ending a decade where murals throughout the county have been threatened and Chicano Studies have been removed from some public education.

Bowers Museum Exhibition: Ito Jakuchu: A Man with No Age - Masterpieces from the Price Collection
April 16th, 2011 - July 10th, 2011
Exquisite and engaging, the scroll and screen paintings of Ito Jakuchu from the prestigious Price Collection have drawn crowds of over 1 million to the Tokyo National Museum. The Bowers Museum is proud to host this important exhibition in conjunction with the county wide JapanOC festival.
The outstanding Japanese screen and scroll paintings from the Etsuko and Joe Price Collection experienced immense success as a traveling exhibition in 2006-2007, attracting over one million viewers. For the first time in the United States, a new exhibit is set to introduce you to one of the Price Collection’s greatest assets – a man considered by many to be one of the greatest artists that ever lived, yet known by very few outside of Japan. His name is Ito Jakuchu. Born in Japan in 1715, he lived as a vegetable seller and a Buddhist monk, all the while living a life devoted to illuminating the beauty of nature with the magical stroke of the artist’s brush. But Jakuchu took his brush beyond just skill, making him different from all others. His works are diverse and so coupled with the heart of nature that they have an ageless quality and appeal to people from all walks of life – no scholarly explanations needed. Jakuchu’s paintings have left their mark, a stroke far beyond the capabilities of ordinary men.
